Why Is Ganesha Called Ekadanta?
Ekadanta means “the One with a Single Tusk.” Scriptures offer several explanations for this divine form:
1. The Battle with Parashurama
When Parashurama arrived to meet Lord Shiva, Ganesha stopped him as Shiva was meditating. Offended, Parashurama struck Ganesha with his axe — breaking one tusk. Yet Ganesha accepted the blow out of respect for the axe gifted by Shiva.
2. Victory over Gajamukhasura
In another tale, Ganesha used his tusk as a weapon to defeat the demon Gajamukhasura.
3. Brotherly Play with Kartikeya
Some traditions say Kartikeya broke Ganesha’s tusk while playfully teasing him.
Each story reveals the deeper message of sacrifice, humility, protection and divine purpose.
The Sacred Story of Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi
The legends of this vrat highlight one truth:
Sincere devotion to Ganesha dispels every pain and restores harmony.
Story 1: The Tale of Dayadev’s Family
In King Prithu’s kingdom lived a wise Brahmin, Dayadev. His eldest daughter-in-law faithfully observed the Sankashti Chaturthi vrat since childhood. Though the mother-in-law questioned the need, she continued the vrat lovingly.
Eventually, she gave birth to a beautiful son. But when she was forced to abandon the vrat, Ganesha’s blessings withdrew. Years later, the son mysteriously disappeared on his wedding day.
Heartbroken, she told her mother-in-law:
"Perhaps this misfortune is because I stopped my Ganesh vrat."
With renewed devotion she resumed the Sankashti vrat, praying with tears of surrender. Pleased by her faith, Lord Ganesha returned her son safely, and the marriage proceeded joyously.
The family thereafter accepted Sankashti Chaturthi as a sacred and essential vrat.
Story 2: Ganesha as a Frail Brahmin
In another tale, Lord Ganesha disguised himself as a frail, learned Brahmin and visited a devotee’s home. She served him lovingly — offering food, clothes and respect.
Touched by her devotion, Ganesha revealed his true form and granted a boon.
She asked, “Please return my lost son.”
Ganesha blessed her:
“Your son will come home safely.”
Soon after, her son returned, and the family recognized the unshakeable power of devotion. Thus, this Sankashti Chaturthi came to be known for fulfilling heartfelt desires.
