What Are Nakshatras? The 27 Stars That Rule Your Destiny

Nakshatras — The Star Mansions of Vedic Astrology
The word "nakshatra" comes from Sanskrit, roughly meaning "that which does not decay" — a reference to the fixed stars. In Vedic and KP astrology, the 360-degree zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes. These lunar mansions pre-date the 12-sign zodiac and form the oldest layer of Indian astronomical observation.
Why Nakshatras Matter in KP
In KP astrology, the nakshatra (star) lord is the middle layer between the sign lord and the sub-lord. The star lord determines the source of results: a planet sitting in the star of a 10th-house occupant delivers 10th-house results, regardless of which sign or house the planet itself occupies. The sub-lord then determines whether those results are positive or negative.
Without understanding nakshatras, KP analysis cannot even begin.

Nakshatras and the Vimshottari Dasha
The nakshatra your Moon occupies at birth determines your starting Vimshottari Dasha. For example, if your Moon is in Rohini, your first Maha Dasha lord is Moon (Rohini's ruler). The balance remaining at birth is proportional to how far through the nakshatra the Moon has travelled.
