Understanding Sub-Lord in KP Astrology — The Key to Predictions

Why the Sub-Lord Decides Everything

In KP astrology, every planet and every house cusp sits at a precise degree in the zodiac. That degree falls within a sign (ruled by the sign lord), within a nakshatra (ruled by the star lord), and within a sub-division of that nakshatra (ruled by the sub-lord). Prof. K.S. Krishnamurti's revolutionary insight was that the sub-lord has the final say — it determines whether the promise of the star lord actually delivers results.

How Sub-Lords Are Calculated

The zodiac spans 360 degrees. It is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. Each nakshatra is then split into 9 unequal parts, allocated to the 9 planets in the same proportion as their Vimshottari Dasha periods (total 120 years).

Sub-Division Sizes

Ketu — 7/120 of 13°20' = 0°46'40"

Venus — 20/120 of 13°20' = 2°13'20"

Sun — 6/120 of 13°20' = 0°40'00"

Moon — 10/120 of 13°20' = 1°06'40"

Mars — 7/120 of 13°20' = 0°46'40"

Rahu — 18/120 of 13°20' = 2°00'00"

Jupiter — 16/120 of 13°20' = 1°46'40"

Saturn — 19/120 of 13°20' = 2°06'40"

Mercury — 17/120 of 13°20' = 1°53'20"

The starting sub-lord of a nakshatra is always the nakshatra lord itself, and the sequence then follows the Vimshottari order (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury).

The Golden Rule of KP Prediction

For any house matter — say marriage (7th house) — look at the sub-lord of the 7th cusp. If that sub-lord is a significator of houses 2, 7, and 11 (the combination favourable for marriage), the native will marry. If the sub-lord signifies houses 1, 6, or 10 (unfavourable), marriage is denied or severely delayed.

This is far more decisive than traditional Vedic methods, which must weigh multiple yogas and transits without a clear tiebreaker.

Cusp Sub-Lord vs Planet Sub-Lord

There are two contexts where sub-lords matter:

Cusp Sub-Lord — determines the result of a house. For example, the sub-lord of the 10th cusp determines career success. See our career prediction guide for a worked example.

Planet Sub-Lord — determines which house results a planet can deliver during its dasha. A planet in the star of a 7th-house occupant with a sub-lord signifying the 7th will trigger marriage during its period.

Common Mistakes

Using the wrong ayanamsa. If your software applies Lahiri instead of true Krishnamurti ayanamsa, cusps shift and sub-lords change. Astro Chart uses the exact KP ayanamsa to avoid this error — learn more in our ayanamsa article.

Ignoring the sub-lord and reading only the star lord. The star lord shows the source of results; the sub-lord shows whether those results are positive or negative.
