Understanding Retrograde Planets in KP System

What Does Retrograde Mean in Astronomy?

Retrograde motion is an optical illusion. As Earth overtakes a slower outer planet in its orbit, that planet appears to move backward against the background stars. Mercury and Venus, being inner planets, appear retrograde when they lap Earth. In reality, no planet ever moves backward — it is a matter of relative motion and perspective.

Retrograde in Traditional Vedic Astrology

Classical Vedic texts have varied opinions on retrograde planets. Some consider a retrograde planet stronger (because it is closer to Earth during retrogression), while others treat it as weakened or confused. The Vakri (retrograde) status is given significant weight in traditional readings, often with contradictory interpretations across different texts.

The KP Perspective: A Different Approach

Prof. K.S. Krishnamurti's approach to retrograde planets is both practical and elegant. In KP astrology, a retrograde planet's significations do not change. The planet still signifies the same houses through its star-lord and sub-lord chain. What changes is the manner and timing of how results manifest.

Key Principles of Retrogression in KP

Significations remain the same: A retrograde Saturn in the star of Mars still carries the same house significations as it would if direct. The star-lord chain is not altered by retrogression.

Results may be delayed or repeated: Retrograde planets often deliver results with a delay. An event promised during a retrograde planet's period may initially fail and then succeed when the planet turns direct.

Re-doing and revisiting: Retrograde planets in a dasha sequence often indicate revisiting past situations — old relationships resurfacing, previously rejected job offers returning, or legal cases being reopened.

The sub-lord remains the decisive factor: The sub-lord of the cusp in question still determines the final outcome. Retrograde status is a modifying factor, not an overriding one.

Practical Impact on Predictions

Retrograde Dasha Lords

When the dasha or bhukti lord is retrograde at birth, its period tends to produce results in a non-linear fashion. The native may experience setbacks followed by recovery, or achieve success through unconventional or indirect routes. The houses signified by the planet will still manifest — but expect twists in the journey.

Retrograde Transit Planets

When a transiting planet retrogrades over a sensitive point in the natal chart (such as a cusp degree), the event associated with that cusp may be triggered multiple times. For instance, Jupiter retrograding over the natal 10th cusp degree could indicate a job change that falls through initially but materializes on Jupiter's second pass.

Mercury Retrograde: Separating Fact from Hype

The popular media obsession with "Mercury retrograde" is largely overblown. In KP astrology, Mercury retrograde is only significant if Mercury is a key significator in your chart. If Mercury is not connected to the houses relevant to your current concern, its retrograde status has minimal personal impact. Do not let blanket Mercury retrograde warnings dictate your decisions.

How to Handle Retrograde Planets in Your Analysis

Calculate significations normally — do not change the house assignments

Note the retrograde status as a timing modifier

Watch for the planet's direct station date as a potential trigger point

In horary charts, a retrograde significator may indicate that the matter will be delayed or require a second attempt

When generating your KP chart on Astro Chart, retrograde planets are clearly marked in the planetary table. This allows you to immediately identify which periods may carry the characteristic "retry" energy of retrograde planets. Combined with the detailed significator data that Astro Chart provides, you can assess exactly how retrogression will modify your predictions.
