True Krishnamurti Ayanamsa vs Lahiri — Why It Matters

What Is Ayanamsa?

Ayanamsa is the angular difference between the tropical zodiac (used in Western astrology, anchored to the vernal equinox) and the sidereal zodiac (used in Vedic and KP astrology, anchored to fixed stars). Because the Earth's axis precesses slowly — about 50 arc-seconds per year — this angle grows over time. Getting it right is essential: an error of just a few arc-minutes can shift a cusp into a different nakshatra sub-division, changing the sub-lord entirely.

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) Ayanamsa

The Lahiri ayanamsa is the most widely used value in Indian astrology. It is defined by setting the star Spica (Chitra) at exactly 0 degrees Libra. The Indian government's official ephemeris uses Lahiri, and most general-purpose astrology software defaults to it.

For the year 2026, the Lahiri ayanamsa is approximately 24 degrees 14 minutes.

True Krishnamurti Ayanamsa

Prof. K.S. Krishnamurti defined his own ayanamsa based on empirical testing of hundreds of horoscopes. The parameters are:

Epoch value: 22 degrees 21 minutes 50 seconds at January 1, 1900

Annual precession: 50.2388 arc-seconds per year

For 2026, this yields approximately 24 degrees 12 minutes — about 2 arc-minutes less than Lahiri. That may sound trivial, but 2 arc-minutes is enough to shift a cusp across a sub-lord boundary in roughly 10 percent of charts.

Why the Difference Matters

Sub-Lord Boundaries

The smallest sub-division in the KP system is Ketu's sub at 0 degrees 46 minutes 40 seconds. An ayanamsa error of 2 minutes places roughly 4 percent of all cusps and planets in the wrong sub — and if that happens to be your 7th cusp, your marriage prediction flips. For a primer on sub-lords, see our sub-lord article.

Dasha Balance

The starting dasha is calculated from the Moon's precise nakshatra position. A shifted ayanamsa moves the Moon's sidereal longitude, which changes the dasha balance at birth. This can push your Maha Dasha start dates off by months. Learn more in our dasha guide.

Cusp House Assignments

A planet near a cusp boundary may land in a different house under a different ayanamsa. This changes which houses the planet signifies and cascades through the entire significator table.

How to Check Which Ayanamsa Your Software Uses

Look at the header of your KP report. A properly generated report should state the ayanamsa name and its numeric value for the birth year. If you see "Lahiri" or "Chitrapaksha" on a KP report, the sub-lords may not match true KP values. Many popular programs — including Jagannatha Hora and some online generators — default to Lahiri even in their KP mode.
