Rahu and Ketu in KP Astrology — Shadow Planets Decoded

The Shadow Planets

Rahu (North Node) and Ketu (South Node) are not physical planets — they are mathematical points where the Moon's orbit intersects the ecliptic. Yet in KP astrology, they are among the most powerful significators. Prof. Krishnamurti gave them special treatment because their influence often surpasses that of physical planets.

The Agency Principle

The fundamental rule for Rahu and Ketu in KP is the agency principle: they act as agents of the planets they are connected to. The hierarchy of agency is:

Conjunction: If Rahu or Ketu is conjunct with another planet, it primarily acts as an agent of that planet.

Star Lord: The nakshatra lord of Rahu/Ketu colors their expression. Rahu in the star of Venus behaves with Venusian undertones.

Sign Lord: The lord of the sign Rahu/Ketu occupies provides the baseline signification.

Because Rahu and Ketu do not own any sign in KP (unlike in some Vedic traditions), they derive all their power from these three connections. This makes them versatile — they can represent almost any planet's energy depending on their chart placement.

Why Rahu and Ketu Are So Powerful

Prof. Krishnamurti observed that when Rahu or Ketu acts as agent of a planet, it often delivers that planet's results more forcefully than the planet itself. This is because the nodes are pure conduits — they have no inherent nature to dilute the borrowed energy.

Practical Implication

If Saturn signifies the 10th house (career) and Rahu is in Saturn's nakshatra, then Rahu becomes a stronger career significator than Saturn. During Rahu's dasha, career events will manifest more prominently than during Saturn's own dasha.

Rahu and Ketu in the Significator Table

When building the significator table, Rahu and Ketu are treated like any other planet at all four levels. They can occupy houses, have planets in their stars, and appear in the stars of house lords. Additionally, their agency connections add significations from the planet they represent.

Rahu — The Amplifier

Rahu amplifies material desires and worldly ambitions.

It is associated with foreign connections, unconventional paths, and sudden events.

In health matters, Rahu can indicate unusual or hard-to-diagnose conditions (see health predictions).

In career, Rahu often brings opportunities through technology, foreign companies, or non-traditional fields.

Ketu — The Separator

Ketu represents detachment, spirituality, and past-life karma.

It brings sudden separations, endings, and transformations.

In health, Ketu is linked to mysterious ailments, viral infections, and spiritual disturbances.

In career, Ketu can indicate research, occult sciences, or a move away from mainstream employment.

Dasha of Rahu and Ketu

Rahu Mahadasha runs for 18 years and Ketu for 7 years. During these periods, the results are determined entirely by their agency connections and the houses they signify. Since Rahu's dasha is long (18 years), its Pratyantar Dasha analysis becomes crucial for timing specific events within it.

The KP reports on Astro Chart clearly display Rahu and Ketu's star lord, sub-lord, and all their significations. The platform automatically computes their agency connections, saving you from the manual cross-referencing that makes shadow planet analysis tedious.

Mastering Rahu and Ketu is a turning point for any KP student. Once you understand their agency principle, you unlock a layer of prediction accuracy that is simply not available in systems that treat the nodes as minor influences.
