KP Horary Astrology — Answering Yes/No Questions Accurately

What Is KP Horary Astrology?
Horary astrology (also called Prashna Shastra) is the art of answering a specific question using a chart cast for the moment the question is sincerely asked. In the KP system, this technique is elevated to remarkable precision through the use of a horary number between 1 and 249.
Unlike natal astrology which requires an accurate birth time, horary astrology bypasses birth data entirely. The querent simply thinks of a number, and the astrologer builds a chart based on that number. This makes KP horary an indispensable tool when birth details are unknown or unreliable.
How the 249 Sub Numbers Work
Prof. K.S. Krishnamurti divided the zodiac into 249 sub-divisions. Each number from 1 to 249 maps to a specific degree range in the zodiac, which in turn fixes the Ascendant (first cusp) of the horary chart. Once the Ascendant is fixed, the remaining 11 cusps are calculated using the Placidus house system for the latitude and time of the query.
Numbers 1-9: Fall in Aries, within Ashwini nakshatra
Numbers 10-18: Continue through Aries into Bharani
Numbers 240-249: Cover the final degrees of Pisces, within Revati nakshatra
Each number uniquely determines the sign lord, star lord, and sub-lord of the Ascendant — giving the astrologer all three levels of KP analysis from a single number.
Step-by-Step: Answering a Question
Step 1: Receive the Number
Ask the querent to think of a number between 1 and 249. The number should come spontaneously — the first number that flashes in the mind. This number carries the cosmic imprint of the moment and the question.
Step 2: Cast the Horary Chart
Using the horary number, cast a chart for the current date, time, and location. The number fixes the Ascendant sub-lord, and all cusps and planetary positions are computed for the query moment.
Step 3: Identify the Relevant Houses
Every question maps to specific houses. For example:
Will I get the job? — Analyse houses 2, 6, 10, 11
Will I get married soon? — Analyse houses 2, 7, 11
Will I travel abroad? — Analyse houses 3, 9, 12
Will I recover from illness? — Analyse houses 1, 5, 11
Step 4: Check the Sub-Lord of the Relevant Cusp
The golden rule: the sub-lord of the relevant cusp determines the outcome. If the sub-lord is a significator of favourable houses, the answer is yes. If it signifies negative houses (6, 8, 12 relative to the matter), the answer is no.
Step 5: Time the Event
Once a "yes" is confirmed, use the significators and dasha-bhukti system to narrow down when the event will occur. The ruling planets at the moment of judgement help validate the timing.
Ruling Planets: The Verification Step
KP horary has a built-in verification mechanism called Ruling Planets. At the moment the astrologer sits down to judge the chart, the sign lord, star lord, and sub-lord of the Ascendant and Moon are noted. These ruling planets should align with the significators of the relevant houses. If they do not, the chart may not be ripe for judgement.
Common Mistakes in KP Horary
Asking the same question repeatedly — the first sincere query is the valid one
Ignoring ruling planets as a verification tool
Using the wrong ayanamsa — KP horary demands the true Krishnamurti ayanamsa, not Lahiri or Raman
Failing to note the exact time and place of the query
