What Are Nakshatras?
The word Nakshatra literally means "that which does not decay." In Vedic and KP astrology, the 360-degree zodiac is divided into 27 equal segments of 13 degrees and 20 minutes each. These segments are the nakshatras — the lunar mansions that form the backbone of all stellar astrology systems, especially Krishnamurti Paddhati.
While Western astrology focuses almost exclusively on the 12 Sun signs, Indian astrology places enormous importance on the Moon's nakshatra at birth. In KP astrology, every planet's nakshatra lord (star lord) and sub-lord determine its true significations, making nakshatras the most critical layer of analysis.

Understanding Padas
Each nakshatra is further divided into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. Each pada corresponds to a navamsa sign (Aries through Pisces in cyclic order). The pada tells you the deeper flavour of the nakshatra — for instance, Ashwini pada 1 (Aries navamsa) is intensely pioneering, while Ashwini pada 4 (Cancer navamsa) brings a nurturing, emotionally driven healing quality.
Nakshatras in KP Astrology
In KP, the nakshatra lord is the star lord, and it determines the primary signification of any planet placed in that star. The sub-lord, which is determined by unequal sub-divisions within the nakshatra, finalises the prediction. This is why a comprehensive KP report must accurately calculate the star lord and sub-lord of every planet and cusp.
