UNDERSTANDING OF SIGN LORD, STAR LORD AND SUB LORD
Share
The Celestial Sphere which is universally called “Zodiac” is an imaginary belt encircling the heavens within which all the planets are revolving. As we know in mathematics a circle is 360 degrees. When this circle is divided into 12 equal parts of 30 degrees, each part is called a sign. When this circle is divided into 27 equal parts of 13 degree 20 minutes, each part is called a Star or a Nakshatra. If we divide a star further into nine parts, this 9th division of a star is called a ‘Sub’. This ‘Sub’ is the real backbone of the KP System. We have already talked about the lord of a sign and the lord of the star above. As lord (owner) of a sign is called ‘Sign lord’, similarly lord of a star is called ‘Star lord’ and the lord of a sub is called ‘Sub lord’. ‘Sub lord’ is calculated on the basis of years allocated to each of the 9 planets in the Vimshottari Dasa system. The years allocated to each planet in Vimshottari Dasa System are as follows

You can notice the difference in the sequence of the planets noted above. This is the sequence used in Vimshottari Dasa. Ketu is listed first here because Ketu owns Ashwini star, the first star of the zodiac, followed by Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury.
A planet while moving in a span of a house will travel through the allocated stars, since the zodiac is divided into 12 signs of 30 degrees each and named as Aries, Taurus etc. Each sign consists of 2 1⁄4 stars and each star having 4 Padas (quadrants) and each such Pada comprises 3° 20′, thus 9 Padas will come to 30° (3° 20′ x 9 Padas). This is common for both the systems viz. Traditional and KP system of astrology.
In traditional astrology, there are 16 kinds of divisions called Shodasa Vargas having their own formulae. This will have 16 divisional charts accordingly.
But, in the KP System, there is no question of divisional charts. Therefore, each star is divided into 9 unequal divisions in proportion and in the same order of the Vimsottari Dasa system. These sub-divisions are called “SUBS”. 27 stars having 9 sub-divisions each will come to 243 sub-division. In addition, 6 more sub-division have been added between Aries and Taurus; Gemini and Cancer; Leo and Virgo; Libra and Scorpio; Sagittarius and Capricorn and Aquarius and Pisces to avoid splitting of the sub-division concerning Rahu and Moon respectively at respective 6 junction. Thus making 249 sub divisions.
