John Couch Adams of Britain and Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier of France, used mathematics to predict that the gravity from another planet beyond Uranus was affecting the orbit of Uranus. They figured out not only where the planet was, but also how much mass it had. A young astronomer, Johann Gottfried Galle, decided to search for the predicted planet and observed Neptune for the first time in 1846.

Neptune is a vast gaseous planet on the outskirts of our Solar System and is not visible by the naked eye however, it can be viewed by a powerful telescope. It takes Neptune 165 years to revolve around the Sun. Its bluish clouds and fogish structure of the surface earned this giant the name of the ‘blue’ planet. There are other objects in orbits similar to Pluto, and their discovery has required more recent large-scale surveys.
