MERCURY IN THE 5TH HOUSE

This is one of the important houses for Mercury; it can be said that Mercury and Jupiter function as the real masters of this house. The 5th house concerns intelligence, education, capacity and training for management, pregnancy, progeny, expertise, mental smartness, safe-and-smooth or difficult-and-painful childbirth, and upbringing of the progeny upto the age of 13 years.

Mercury rules intelligence, wisdom, learning, experience, education, capacity to grasp, imagination, guess-work, threading the missing links, analysis, collection of information and statistics. Thus it will be seen that 5th house and Mercury are made for each other. Always consider the placement of Mercury in any Birth-chart and its relationship with the 5th house, and at the same time, consider the Saptamansh chart also, irrespective whether it is the horoscope of a male or female.

However, remember that memory is basically ruled by Jupiter, but Mercury too is directly connected with memory in the sense that if a matter has not been grasped, it hasn't gone into the mind, and so there is no question whatsoever of memory. Qualities like writing, speaking, literature, journalistic reporting, editing, translation, and oratorship are all ruled by Mercury, and Mercury alone.

Even knowledge of any future-telling sciences, including astrology and palmistry, are the domains of Mercury. No one can become a good and impressive speaker, whether in private conversation or public speaking, without the favourability of Mercury. It has been observed that it is immaterial what Rasi is in the 5th house; Mercury's mere presence is enough to make a person exceptionally intelligent and capable of grasping a matter or a situation in the first instance itself.

If Aries, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius or Pisces were in the 5th house, the person could become a writer, poet, journalist, professor, teacher, preacher, priest without any restriction of religion, faith or cult.

However, Mercury is not very effective in so far as drishti (aspecting) is concerned. From the 5th house, Mercury would have direct drishti on the 11th house, which concerns income. Mercury would not influence the 11th house to any great extent in spite of its direct drishti on the 11th house from the 5th house. One can often find learned scholars, authors, poets, editors, dialogue-writers for films, professors, teachers, priests and preachers in rather tight or hand-to-mouth financial position, often depending on others for financial help, for medical treatment and marriages in family. Though, in modern times things have changed, but in the not so distant past, there was a common saying – where there is wealth, there is not much education, and where there is vast education, there's not much wealth!
