HOUSES AND THEIR SIGNIFICATIONS

There are twelve houses (a house is called 'Bhava' in Sanskrit language) in Jyotisha. Each of the twelve houses signifies a region of the concerns of life, and the identity of the sign of that house colours what may be expected from that life. The significations of each house starting from Lagna. The name of the twelfth houses and the areas of life represented by them are as follows:
1. LAGNA (FIRST BHAVA)
Lagna signifies the native self (Atman) and his physical stature, colour, immunity, vitality, vigour, form and shape, health, personality, habit of thinking, natural disposition, success or failure in attempts, fortune or misfortune, honour, dignity, prosperity, general well-being, courage and confidence, longevity, span of life, age, profit to younger brother, patrimony of mother, father’s delightful deeds, danger to maternal uncle, demise of partner, neighbours to elder brothers and his short journeys, the first son’s long journey, head and upper part of the face, changes of the individual’s life etc.
In Mundane Astrology Lagna or the Ascendant signifies the Masses, the general condition of the people, status of the country, public health and the cabinet.
In Horary Astrology the first house may be said to symbolise the person asking the question as well as efforts of the querent.
2. SECOND HOUSE
Money and Money matters, financial circumstances, profit or gain, fortune, wealth, ambition, worldly attainments, food, Native’s speech and family speech, relatives and close relatives, addition of family members, one of maraka house also, jewellery, precious stones and metals (gold, pearls, sapphire, rubies, diamonds etc.), metals, second marriage, loss to younger brother, mother’s gain, profession and success of children, danger to partner, disease of father, purchase of a house or vehicle or land by elder brother, travel abroad to younger brother and sister, the child’s profession and respect, mother’s income or profit, travels far to younger maternal uncle, neck, throat, right eye, nail, tongue, nose, teeth, cheeks and chin, mouth, food, documents, bonds, securities, stocks and shares, promissory notes, mortgage, bank balance or other negotiable or exchangeable assets etc.
In Mundane Astrology Second house signifies National wealth, Revenue Department, Banks, Finance of people, commercial and imports indications.
In Horary Astrology the 2nd house denotes the money of the querist, his loss or gain in speculations relating to business and pecuniary affairs or any question in particular (1st, 2nd and 11th houses) also of loans etc.
3. THIRD HOUSE

In Horary Astrology the 3rd house denotes courage and confidence, one has to find out whether one will be bold or not, rumour is true or false etc.
4. FOURTH HOUSE
House, home, home life, mind, education (school & college), mother, domestic happiness, landed property, agriculture, buildings, possessions, vehicles, life at old age, comfort, water, ornaments, clothes, relatives, friends, chest, graveyards, hidden treasures, savings of younger brother, the child’s own loss or travel abroad, profit to maternal uncle, danger to father, partner’s profession.
In Mundane Astrology Fourth house signifies public education, school and colleges and other such institutions. Sway over mines, gardens, public buildings, crops, agriculture and determines the termination of any undertaking.
In Horary Astrology the 4th house denotes the termination, conclusion, to the termination, conclusion and end of every undertaking whether in the nativity or in Horary Astrology.
5. FIFTH HOUSE

In Horary Astrology the 5th house denotes all about child birth, the fifth house being a trine house, indicating “Poorva Punya Sthana” shows what meritorious deeds one could have done in the previous birth. Even tutelary deities, chanting of mantras or sacred hymns, spiritual practices, intelligence and literary compositions are influenced by this house.
6. SIXTH HOUSE
House of sickness, debts, diseases, arms, wounds, employment and service, subordinates or servants, food and dietary habits, enemies, litigation, a wicked act, fear, humiliation, theft, ill-fame, tenants, favourable result in competition, obstacles in any undertaking, maternal uncles and aunts, pet animals, dress and hygiene, sanitation, dietetics, herbs, phenomenal magic, superstation, worry, annoyance, purchase or sale of conveyance by younger brother and sister, separation from the partner, danger to elder brother or sister, occupation or business of the father, loss to the partner, investment or purchase made by the partner, mother’s short trip, the financial condition of the child, father’s deeds and glory, stomach.
In Mundane Astrology, the Sixth house rules over loan and debts of the nation, health of the people, the working class, industries, sanitation and public health, territorial and international attacks, industrial expansion like projects.
In Horary Astrology the 6th house denotes the divorce between the couple as well as separation from partnership.
7. SEVENTH HOUSE
Wife or husband, desire, sexual enjoyment, passion, cohabitation, public & public activities, dowry, partnership, open enemies, recovery of lost property, legal bondage, litigation, fines, divorce, agreements, contracts, influence in foreign countries, danger to life, theft, mother’s immovable property and vehicles, adopted child, friend of father, short trip of the first child, gain to father, long journey to the elder brother and sister, financial strength of maternal uncle, maraka house, death, difficulties, loins.
In Mundane Astrology the Seventh house is considered in matters pertaining to foreign relationships and arbitration, war and peace, foreign affairs, international trade, general conditions of women and laws relating to marriage and divorce, public reaction to national policies, public meetings, immorality in the country, condition of women.
In Prashna or Horary Astrology, this house answers queries relating to the recovery of lost property, describes the thief, pick pockets etc. The Lagna represents the owner of stolen property. The fourth bhava denotes the place of the stolen article. The 7th shows a thief. The 8th bhava being 2 to the 7th indicates the thief’s wealth. So when the planet in 7th or the lord of 7 is eclipsed or weak, the thief will be caught.
8. EIGHT HOUSE
Longevity or span of life, accidents, sorrow, obstructions, hindrance, difficulties, impediment, scandal, ill repute, punishment, death, Asuchi (impurity), inheritance legacies, wills, insurance, gratuity, bonus, occultism, life of husband, mystery, misfortune, delay and dejection, disappointment, danger from enemies, accident or suicide or to chronic diseases, sudden and violent death, surgeons, medical officers, health inspector, slaughter houses, blames, unearned wealth, share or profits, mother’s gain by lottery or in speculation, private parts, mental affliction, anxiety, tension, depression, worries. The financial condition of the partner, Father’s loss or father’s trip abroad, the profession of the elder brother and sister, home and car of the first child. The Lagna indicates incarnation, the 8th house denotes disincarnation, the 8th house as the end of man’s life in this world.

10. TENTH HOUSE
Profession, karma, livelihood, commerce, trade, success, rank or position, character, honour, dignity, good conduct, name and fame, glory, power and prestige, status, rank, permanency, government, employer, appointment, superiority or affluence, independent pursuits, promotion, reputation, ambition, authority, command, worldly activities, pilgrimage, ill-health to children, danger to younger brother, mother’s opponents, secret enemies to elder brother, father’s earnings, disease or illness of the child, danger of younger brother and sister, loss of elder brother and sister, knees, last rites to one’s parents, retirement from in this world.
In Mundane Astrology the Tenth house governs with Government in a general sense, ruling class, its affairs and its chief executive. It signifies the head of the State, whether monarch or President. Also royalty, the party in office, the national leaders, the upper strata of society and those in authority and those in authority, eminent and distinguished persons and the aristocracy. In Mundane Astrology, the 11th house is indicated Parliament or equivalent legislative branches in other Governments. It rules to Lok Sabha, the lower house of State Assemblies, Corporations, Municipal Bodies, District Boards, Panchayats and similar legislative bodies. It also bears relation to the parties, legislation, governmental policies and planning. It is related to international friendships and exchange of amenities among nations. It deals with companies, stores, governing bodies, associations etc. and all institutions where group interest is involved. It represents the wealth and money or the exchequer or the Government and the friends and allies of the nation.

12. TWELFTH HOUSE

Sources of loss to the nation, prisons, Secret and occult societies are governed by this house. It also concerns monasteries and other forms of institutional religion.
